I was quite predicting what the next generation of commercial airliners would be. We are seeing now the completion of the 787, an aircraft made mostly out of composite materials fitted with the newest cockpit and engine technology. Airbus claims that their A350 will be better but I have not seen any detailed write up on the A350 plans.
Commercial liners used to go more than mach 2 except, they consumed gazillion tons of fuel 3x faster than a 747.
What do you think is in store for the next generation liners? With the new shapes taking place, new wing design, more efficient but powerful engines, and new materials being used, I do foresee supersonic flights coming back to service, but for sure this will only be allowed over sea and not land as sonic booms are really loud.
I do also foresee twin-engine jumbo as the battle between Airbus and Boeing or going really toe to toe!
