Philippines mulls amendments in air deals with AsiaPac, Canada
MANILA, Philippines - The country's air negotiating panel is entertaining and seeking amendments in bilateral air agreements this year, a panel member said.
The countries include:
Japan
Hong Kong
Myanmar
Canada
Papua New Guinea
The air panel conducts negotiations with different countries whose airlines would like to mount flights to and from the Philippines, or has destinations or airports that local airlines are eyeing to include in their portfolio.
In general, the bilateral agreements specify how frequent the total flights one country could mount every week. Meanwhile, specifics on how many seats per flight is allowed dictate the type of aircrafts each country's commercial airlines could use.
"There are a couple of them which are interested. These are Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong and Myanmar. They approached us," said Carmelo Arcilia, a representative in the air panel.
Arcilla said the country is in communication with them to set a date for the air talks. "We have written them but we are still waiting for their reply on the schedule."
Canada
The Philippines, Arcilla addedadded, is also interested in amending its air talks with Canada.
Philippine Airlines (PAL) is the only local airline mounting flights to Canada. It wants to be granted additional flight frequencies so it could frequently service the routes
Currently, PAL operates a direct flight to Vancouver five-times-a-week on board an Airbus A340-300 aircraft which seats 264 passengers.
The panel also hopes to hold air talks with Papua New Guinea.
Last year, the Philippine air panel has inked air pacts with Bahrain, Turkey, South Korea, Singapore, and China.
Air negotiators
Arcilla is the executive director of Civil Aeronautics Board, which is a member of the air panel.
The other panel members include the
Department of Transportation and Communications
Department of Foreign Affairs
Department of Tourism
Department of Trade and Industry
representatives from the airline companies
Clark International Airport Authority
